The I4C Model: Charting the Course to Secure Relationships
When we ask ourselves, "Why do I do what I do, and how do I change?" we are often trying to understand why our connections feel volatile or disappointing. We tend to measure relational health by how intense the initial spark is, but real longevity and safety are determined by architecture, not chemistry.
The I4C Model defines the foundational pillars that make a relationship fundamentally healthy, stable, and capable of enduring challenges. Practicing this formula allows you to foresee (I4C) the outcome of any dynamic.

For those of us with an insecure attachment style, healthy relationships feel foreign - sometimes boring - due to our childhood experiences. For example, to the Dismissive Avoidant, intimacy feels threatening, to the Anxious Preoccupied, distance feels abandoning & to the Fearful Avoidant, emotional sobriety feels like dread or waiting for the other shoe to drop. We bring all of this into every aspect of our lives.
So ... how to we recognize healthy relationships OR integrate our own healthy patterns in order to build trust?
In Integrated Attachment Theory, earned security isn't about covert strategies or managing tactics: it is about establishing a Safe Harbor. Security requires a foundation built on five core pillars: Inclusion, Communication, Consistency, Consideration, & Cohesion.
Here is how the I4C Model breaks down:
1. Inclusion: "Make me part of your day and your life."
Inclusion is the deliberate invitation into one another’s daily reality. It isn't about spending every waking second together; it’s about micro-moments of attunement, such as a quick check-in text, sharing an update, or creating shared rituals that say, "You belong here, & I create space for you in my world."
2. Communication: "Transparent, reciprocal dialogue."
Secure communication means expressing needs, boundaries, & emotional realities, in a respectful manner, without fear of retribution or ghosting. It replaces hyper-vigilant mind-reading with direct, gentle clarity without blame.
3. Consistency: "Reliable presence over time."
Consistency is the steady rhythm that calms anxious hyper-activation & invites avoidant defenses to drop. It means showing up predictably so neither partner is attempting to forecast or read between the lines. Consistency also provides 'data' in order to improve the ability to self-soothe through challenging limiting beliefs or negative thoughts in real time.
4. Consideration: "Thoughtfulness rooted in attunement."
Consideration goes beyond basic manners; it is an active awareness of your partner's emotional baseline, capacity, & boundaries. It is offering care without over-functioning or absorbing their emotional weight.
5. Cohesion: "What you say and DO matches."
Cohesion is the ultimate mark of relational integrity. Words set the expectation, but actions deliver the reality. When spoken intentions align seamlessly with observed behavior, trust anchors deep into the bedrock of the relationship when the storms roll through.
The Takeaway
If you find yourself stuck in cycles of chasing, withdrawing, or feeling hyper-vigilant, look at where the chain is dropping a link. Real, lasting change begins when we drop anchor in these five truths & allow our actions to reflect the safety we want to build.
